A big part of the thrill in the pirate sandbox game, Sea of Thieves, is the unpredictability of the open sea. Whether you’re crossing paths with fellow players, escaping the tentacles of a kraken, or skirmishing with a battered skeleton sloop, you never quite know what’s next. Among these thrilling encounters, it’s the megalodon that keeps sailors on their toes. These colossal sharks make their presence known with a spine-chilling musical introduction, shadowing your vessel with the constant threat of attack. Just recently, Rare shared a lighthearted yet cautionary video on X, unveiling a new danger lurking in the waters: two fresh types of megalodons. One of these creatures is encased in flames, threatening to ignite your ship with its fiery rage.
This fiery addition stirs up a number of intriguing questions. For starters, how did they manage to capture that shakycam footage in Sea of Thieves? You’d think shakycams weren’t a thing during pirate times! Moreover, it’s clear that the Feared Redmaw megalodon, with its potential to set your wooden ship aflame, presents a significant threat. But there’s another newcomer you won’t want to miss: the Barnacled Dread. It’ll be interesting to uncover what unique challenges this one brings to the seas.
Fans eager for more details will have to wait a bit – until February 20th, to be exact – when the new season kicks off. This season, dubbed Wild Things, promises a fresh focus on the Hunter’s Call faction and is set to introduce some intriguing new wildlife to the game. Yet, none seem as formidable as these new megalodons. Personally, I’m hoping they decide to keep their distance from my ship!
