Mounting evidence suggests that the trio of Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie from Generation 6 could very well be the starters for Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The game, which was teased last year with a short CG trailer, confirmed a few critical details, although much remains a mystery.
The initial trailer for Pokemon Legends: Z-A gave players a glimpse into Lumiose City of the Kalos region, confirming the return of some familiar Pokemon and the revival of Mega Evolutions. Yet, the game has largely kept its secrets, especially regarding which starter Pokemon will be offered to players.
The buzz around the starters gained traction recently when Chespin and Fennekin featured in artwork promoting the 2025 Pokemon World Championships. Reliable leaks have also suggested that Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie would headline the starter lineup for Legends: Z-A.
While Generation 6’s starter Pokemon as the choice for the game seems plausible given the Lumiose City setting, it does diverge from the precedent set by Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Despite being set in a historical version of the Sinnoh region, Arceus didn’t incorporate Sinnoh starters as its own. There was speculation that Legends: Z-A might adopt a similar mix-and-match approach, choosing starters from various regions, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Even if these three make the cut, they might come with unexpected twists. Leakers hint that Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie might differ from what fans remember. They could have alternate final evolutions akin to Arceus’ starters. Another possibility is brand-new Mega Evolutions. For now, all fans can do is wait and wonder.
Excitement is building towards the upcoming Pokemon Presents event on February 27, part of the Pokemon Day festivities. Though not officially confirmed, many anticipate that Pokemon Legends: Z-A will feature in the presentation, possibly unveiling the starter Pokemon. All eyes will be on the broadcast at 9 a.m. ET, hoping for concrete answers and a deeper dive into what this new game will offer.
