Dynasty Warriors: Origins is an absolute gem of a game. In fact, when I had the chance to review it, I was ready to sing its praises even more, if only my editor had given me the green light. This hack-and-slash RPG easily claims the top spot as my favorite in the series, setting its scene in the storied era of the Chinese Three Kingdoms. You step into the shoes of a soldier shrouded in mystery, aiming to reshape China’s destiny. Now, I might be a fan, but don’t just take my word for it.
This past weekend, Dynasty Warriors: Origins attracted nearly 70,000 players at once, reaching an impressive peak of 69,483 concurrent players. To put that into perspective, the last four installments of this iconic series could only gather about 3,900 players simultaneously. That’s a staggering increase of more than 17 times the player count for this latest release.
Alejandro from Game Discover Co shared on social media that Origins hit an impressive peak and has already gathered 4,450 highly positive reviews. This achievement follows a disappointing previous release, making Origins the second most successful launch in Koei Tecmo’s history on that platform.
It’s not just a win within the Dynasty Warriors lineup, but it’s also a standout success among all of Koei Tecmo’s releases. Alejandro illustrated these stats beautifully in a graph that highlights these distinctions.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins vs. Wo Long
While Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty holds the title for Koei Tecmo’s biggest launch, the company likely finds more joy in Origins’ achievement. Wo Long currently struggles with mixed reviews on Steam, holding a 47% approval rate. In stark contrast, Dynasty Warriors: Origins boasts a 94% approval rate, which likely translates into healthier sales figures.
Despite having around 6,000 fewer active users, it’s hard to imagine Wo Long was more profitable on Steam. Given Steam’s return policy, I suspect quite a few players returned Wo Long. This isn’t to take away from Wo Long’s significant accomplishment, with over 3.8 million players in under two months. It’s just that Origins has managed to shine brilliantly in a niche genre.
Let’s see what players are saying about Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
Lothair Mantelar shared, "It’s been quite a long while since I actually enjoyed Dynasty Warriors. This is an excellent step forward for the series and feels like a fresh start without abandoning everything that made the previous titles fun. Very interested to see how they build on this one."
Ackman enthused, "I’m not entirely sure how they made the officer fights feel like Ghost of Tsushima while the crowds feel like a Warriors game, but they pulled it off. Best Warriors game in years, as a fan of the genre."
And Enhasa remarked, "They could’ve easily crapped out another Dynasty Warriors game, and I still would’ve liked it, but instead, they opted to make a really, really good one. Definitely one of my favorite trends in gaming. From gameplay to voice acting, everything is just better. I do miss the days of Cow Cow, though. RIP Cow Cow, you were a real one."
So, if you haven’t already caught on, I’m quite the fan myself. Dynasty Warriors: Origins is exactly the kind of refresh the series needed. Whether you’re hooked on deep storytelling or the technical marvel of fighting hordes of enemies at once, you’re set for a thrilling experience. If you’ve ever found enjoyment in Warriors-style gameplay, it’s time to get acquainted with my 2025 game of choice.
