The Nintendo Switch has been an extraordinary success story, but some experts are skeptical that its successor will match this achievement.
Currently, the original Nintendo Switch has sold around 146 million units, making it the third-best-selling console in history. It’s trailing by only eight million behind the Nintendo DS, which holds the second spot, and 14 million behind the PS2, the all-time leader. With the official announcement of the Switch 2, it seems unlikely the original Switch will climb to the number one position. However, its place among the best-selling consoles ever is secure. This backdrop sets high expectations for the Switch 2, yet one industry analyst suggests that it might not quite measure up to the original’s success.
In a conversation with GamesRadar, Mat Piscatella from the market research company Circana weighed in. “The Switch 2 can (and I expect it to) be a massive success. But I also don’t expect it to reach Switch,” Piscatella remarked. “Forecasting for an outlier is challenging. While it could happen, the odds aren’t high.” He highlighted that it’s “fantastic” the Switch 2 appears to be a larger and more robust version of the original, which is exactly what people anticipated and wanted. However, he questioned whether these enhancements would be enough to draw in new buyers outside of the original Switch’s audience.
The initial trailer for the Switch 2 highlights that it’s larger and features a new Mario Kart title, which is certainly appealing, though it might not entirely drive console sales. “There may be more surprises that haven’t been thought of or leaked yet,” Piscatella pointed out. “Looks like we’ll have to wait until the Direct for that.”
Even if the Switch 2 doesn’t hit the incredible numbers of its predecessor, it’s likely to perform admirably. After all, Nintendo’s games can only be played on their consoles. We’ll just have to wait for the Direct to see what surprises are in store for us.
