And just like that, my streak of never shelling out actual money for Nintendo Switch Online is coming to an end.
One of the popular features of the Switch is wrapping up right after the re-release of Xenoblade Chronicles X, and another won’t be compatible with the upcoming Switch 2.
In an announcement tonight, Nintendo revealed that the My Nintendo Gold program will be discontinued starting March 25 at 12:59 a.m. ET. This program has been a favorite among users, offering 1% back in eShop credit for physical first-party releases during their first year, and 5% back on all eShop purchases. The exception to this change will be for physical games released between March 25, 2024, and the program’s end date, allowing them to earn credit for a year after release. This includes titles like Endless Ocean: Luminous and Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition. However, Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond won’t be eligible.
Moreover, Nintendo has updated the support page for Switch Online Vouchers, confirming they won’t be usable for Switch 2 titles. Previously, Switch Online subscribers could purchase pairs of these vouchers for $99 US or equivalent currency and redeem them for first-party games. Thankfully, these vouchers will still be available for future releases on the original Switch, so they can be used for games like Legends Z-A and Prime 4.
