When it comes to blending other beloved elements into The Witcher 3 universe through mods, we’ve seen some fascinating attempts before. Remember when someone combined Kazuma Kiryu’s iconic tattoo with Geralt? Well, there’s a new mod in town that lets you ride a dragon, reminiscent of the Dragonborn’s adventures in Skyrim’s Solstheim.
Just like the assortment of incredible Witcher 3 mods we highlighted last year—from intriguing new quests to the chance to stumble through the deck of a grand ship, and even stepping into Ciri’s shoes with her Witcher 4 outfit—this latest mod wouldn’t have been realized without the invaluable REDkit tools.
Titled ‘Herald of the White Frost’, this creation comes from modder errornoaccess. If you’re familiar with their work, you might recall enjoying a few hours running around as Geralt, transformed into a centaur horse-man. Their portfolio also includes mounts featuring griffins, fiends, and even White Orchard’s own alchemist, Tomira.
Their newest addition is a unique “custom dracolizard monster”. First, you’ll need to defeat it in a boss battle, and then you can ride it, much like the dragon riding in Skyrim—a feature we’ve all likely toyed with and then somewhat forgotten about.
To encounter this dragon, named Unhcegila, the Herald of the White Frost, head to the frozen town during the portal-hopping quest ‘Through Time and Space’. It’s also possible to summon the beast using a “Mysterious Sapphire Crystal”, conveniently available for purchase from four specific vanilla merchants detailed in the mod’s description.
After tackling the not-so-easy battle, you’ll receive the “Horn of the Frozen Flame”. You can use this item, probably in the same manner as the cue in the centaur mod, to summon the dragon for a ride. The first time you do, there’s a handy tutorial to familiarize you with the dragon-riding controls.
