The upcoming season of MultiVersus is set to be its last hurrah. Warner Bros. Games announced on Friday that the development of MultiVersus is wrapping up, with the game slated to go offline on May 30, coinciding with the conclusion of season 5.
While the online aspects are winding down, players will still be able to enjoy MultiVersus offline, battling locally or against AI opponents. After May 30 at 9 a.m. PDT, the game will no longer be available for download. In anticipation of this change, Warner Bros. has already halted real-money transactions, putting an end to purchases of the premium currency, Gleamium.
Season 5 is rolling out with a splash of fresh content, including two new characters: DC’s Aquaman and Looney Tunes’ Lola Bunny. According to WB Games, players can earn all the new season 5 content through gameplay. Mark your calendars for February 4, when the fifth and final season kicks off.
WB Games expressed their gratitude, stating, “We want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. Our teams at Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games have poured our heart and soul into this game. We remain forever grateful for the phenomenal support from the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”
Launched initially in July 2022 as an open beta, MultiVersus went offline about a year later. During this time, Warner Bros. and Player First were hard at work refining netcode, matchmaking, and the progression system. They also took the opportunity to introduce new characters, maps, and modes to keep the content flowing. A relaunch in May 2024 brought in a slew of changes and fresh characters, but some tweaks didn’t quite hit the mark for players. After a couple of promising starts, interest seemed to dwindle, as seen in data from Steam Charts and Twitch viewership.
By the time season 5 wraps up, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 characters hailing from various film, television, and comic book franchises. This Smash Bros.-inspired fighter features big names like Batman, Superman, Rick and Morty, Shaggy and Velma from Scooby Doo, and the iconic duo Tom and Jerry. Post-2024, the game also welcomed Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, Agent Smith from The Matrix, the Powerpuff Girls, Beetlejuice, and many more.
MultiVersus remains free to play and accessible for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
