It’s official: Hollow Knight: Silksong is alive and kicking, dodging those recent conspiracy theories swirling around. Matthew Griffin, the brains behind marketing and publishing at Team Cherry, cleared the air last Friday by announcing on X, “Yes, the game is real, progressing, and will release.”
Griffin’s message came in response to an X user’s request for clarity, especially after Hollow Knight speedrunner fireb0rn poured cold water on the rumor mill. The theory selling like hotcakes among the game’s community was buzzing about an imminent release date. It all started when fans thought they had decoded a hint from developer William Pellen’s alternate X account, which featured a new profile picture and teased, “something big is coming.” Spoiler alert—it wasn’t.
So, we return to the daily grind of eagerly waiting for any crumb of news about the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2017 action hit. Since Silksong’s announcement back in 2019, its fans have been on something akin to a treasure hunt for release date clues. The eagerness has grown into a running joke, with every major gaming announcement raising hopes that maybe, just maybe, Silksong will make a surprise appearance. If you venture into the game’s subreddit, you’d find it reminiscent of that classic It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia meme, where Charlie Day frantically deciphers patterns on a wall. It almost feels like the game’s release is necessary, just to give these fervent fans a new obsession.
The wait hopefully won’t stretch too much longer. Initially slated for 2023 and later pushed to 2024, the game missed those targets. Nonetheless, we can hang onto the fact that it’s still in the pipeline. Keep your anticipation antennas up for April when we might catch some big news during the first Switch 2 Nintendo Direct presentation. And if that doesn’t pan out, we always have the Summer Games Fest to look forward to.
