Ultimate Objective: Face off against Godzilla and make it out alive!
Lately, my journey with Fortnite has been a bit of a rollercoaster. I reflect on the early days, back when the game was in its prime during that unforgettable first year. It was a time without bots, when each battle royal was a thrilling mix of chaos, humor, and the sting of loss, drawing in players of all calibers. Fast forward to today, and that invigorating game experience seems like a distant memory. Now, most of the opponents you face are essentially bots—performing half-hearted attacks and practically offering themselves up on a plate. Also gone is the faint, enigmatic narrative that once allowed players’ imaginations to run wild. These days, Fortnite leans heavily on MMORPG-style quests and characters who lay out the backstory plain as day. Meanwhile, a steady influx of characters from well-known “IPs” (sigh) flood the shop each week, slowly erasing any distinct identity Fortnite might have once boasted—instead morphing it into something reminiscent of a consumerist dystopia, straight out of Ready Player One.
However, Fortnite still has its hooks in me. There’s something tangible about the world when I’m in the game—almost as if I can feel the terrain beneath my virtual feet. I delight in the seamless way I can sprint, slide, leap, and navigate the landscape. On tough days, I find solace in logging on and quickly knocking out a few daily quests to snag some easy XP, losing myself momentarily in the process. And I can’t deny being swept up by Fortnite’s stunning displays, especially when it pulls off grand spectacles that are beyond the reach of most other games. Right now, that thrill is alive as Godzilla, the king of monsters himself, threatens to make an appearance in each match. I stumbled upon a gameplay video showing someone as Godzilla, and it blew me away—the sense of scale and raw power felt spot on. This weekend, I suspect I’ll plunge into playing more Fortnite than usual, eager to witness that monumental destruction from the vulnerable perspective of a diminutive human, sprinting for dear life from something genuinely terrifying. So, to all my fellow Fortnite players out there—if you morph into Godzilla and spot a tiny figure scuttling about down below, I humbly ask for mercy. I promise I pose no threat! — Carolyn Petit
