The voice actors for the French version of Apex Legends have reportedly declined to sign a deal that would allow their voices to be used in training AI systems.
Pascale Chemin, who provides the voice for Wraith in the French version of this popular battle royale game, shared on Twitter that a publisher—most likely Electronic Arts—attempted to include a contract clause permitting AI training with their recordings. While no official names were mentioned, the details strongly hint at Apex Legends and EA being involved.
Additionally, 31 other voice actors associated with the production have also refused to sign the agreement, instead drafting a formal letter of refusal to the publisher.
“If we don’t stand together now to ensure that a clause protecting our voices is added to all of our contracts—extending beyond just our team to every video game dubbing studio—then we might never see such a provision, and that would lead to significant issues,” expressed Chemin, as translated by ResetEra.
Chemin highlighted a current struggle, stating, “Refusing work nowadays seems impractical, considering there’s scarce employment for many of us and we are financially squeezed. While a salary is indeed needed, what’s being proposed isn’t just about doing work; it involves surrendering our skills to train AI that might one day take over our roles. It’s like being asked to contribute to our own professional demise and to endorse AI technology we essentially oppose.”
